Reiki

A pathway to inner balance and healing

Reiki is a reminder that we are more than just physical beings. We are energy, and healing happens when we align with that essence.
— Dr. Mikao Usui
  • Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a gentle, hands-on energy healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese words “Rei,” meaning “universal,” and “Ki,” meaning “life energy.” It works by channeling universal life force energy through the practitioner’s hands to help restore balance and promote the body’s natural ability to heal.

The practice of Reiki is based on the belief that life energy flows through all living things. When this energy is balanced, we experience physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. However, when our energy is low or blocked, it can lead to feelings of stress, anxiety, or physical illness. Reiki gently clears these blockages, allowing energy to flow freely again, bringing harmony to the mind, body, and spirit.

    The History of Reiki

Reiki was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan after a period of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama in the early 1920s. He created a system of healing that uses the hands to channel universal energy and restore balance. Dr. Usui believed this energy could promote healing and wellness on multiple levels. His teachings were passed down through several masters and eventually brought to the West by Mrs. Hawayo Takata in the late 1930s, who shared Reiki with the world, helping it gain recognition as a powerful holistic healing practice.

  • Reiki works by channeling life force energy through the hands of the practitioner and into the client’s energy field. During a session, I act as a conduit, allowing this energy to flow into areas where it’s needed most. Reiki is not directed by the practitioner; instead, it intuitively moves to the parts of your body, mind, or emotions that require healing and balance.

When energy becomes stagnant or blocked, it can contribute to stress, emotional imbalance, or physical discomfort. Reiki helps release these blockages, encouraging the smooth flow of energy and supporting the body’s natural healing processes. Clients often describe sensations of warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation, indicating the energy is at work.

  • Reiki offers a wide range of benefits, addressing not only the physical but also the emotional and spiritual aspects of well-being. Some of the key benefits include:

    • Stress Reduction and Relaxation: Reiki induces a state of deep relaxation, helping to lower stress and anxiety levels.

    • Emotional Healing: It supports the release of emotional pain and enhances feelings of peace and emotional balance.

    • Pain Relief: Reiki can reduce physical pain and discomfort by releasing tension and promoting the body’s natural healing response.

    • Energy Rebalancing: It restores energetic balance, helping you feel more centered, focused, and aligned.

    • Improved Sleep and Mood: Regular Reiki sessions can improve sleep quality, elevate mood, and increase a sense of overall well-being.

  • A Reiki session is a gentle, non-invasive experience where you remain fully clothed. During the session, you’ll lie down comfortably on a massage table or sit in a chair. I will place my hands lightly on or just above specific areas of your body, moving through a series of hand positions. Each position is held for a few minutes, allowing the energy to flow into those areas.

During the session, you may experience:

    • A gentle warming or tingling sensation where my hands are placed.

    • Deep relaxation or a meditative state.

    • Emotional releases, such as feelings of peace, joy, or even unexpected emotions coming to the surface.

Every session is unique and tailored to your energy’s needs at that moment.

    Session Length:

Sessions typically last 60 minutes, including preparation and reflection afterwards, but shorter or longer sessions can be arranged depending on your needs.

  • After a Reiki session, most people report feeling a profound sense of relaxation and inner calm. You might experience:

    • Emotional Clarity: A clearer understanding of your emotions or a sense of emotional release.

    • Increased Energy: Some clients feel energized and uplifted, while others may feel more grounded and centered.

    • Physical Comfort: If you’ve been dealing with physical pain or tension, you may notice a reduction in discomfort.

    • Temporary Shifts: Occasionally, you may experience heightened emotions or increased sensitivity as your body and mind process the energy shift—this is known as a “healing response” and typically passes within a day or two.

  • Reiki is a safe and gentle practice for most people, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind:

    • Pacemaker:
If you depend on a pacemaker, Reiki could possibly influence the rhythm of its working. Therefore Reiki will not be given.

    Severe Psychiatric Disorders:
Reiki should be approached with caution for individuals experiencing severe psychiatric disorders, such as:

    • Bipolar disorder

    • Psychosis

    • Schizophrenia

Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure that Reiki is a suitable addition to your treatment plan.

    • Pregnancy:
Reiki is generally considered safe and beneficial for pregnant women, and many practitioners regularly work with pregnant clients. It’s gentle and non-invasive, making it an excellent option for reducing stress, managing pregnancy-related discomfort, and promoting relaxation. However, if there are complications or if the pregnancy is high-risk, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider before starting Reiki.

    • Diabetes:
Reiki may occasionally cause temporary shifts in blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, it’s recommended to monitor your levels before and after a session and consult your healthcare provider before beginning Reiki treatments.

    • Acute or unstable medical conditions:
If you have a serious medical condition, such as a recent surgery or broken bones that still require adjustments, Reiki should be postponed until the condition stabilizes. Once cleared by a doctor, Reiki can support the healing process.

    • Epilepsy:
Some individuals with epilepsy may experience heightened sensitivity during Reiki sessions. Please consult your healthcare provider to discuss whether Reiki is appropriate for you.

    • Organ transplant and immune-suppressing medication:
Reiki is known to support the immune system. If you are taking medication to suppress your immune system due to an organ transplant or other medical condition, Reiki could potentially counteract the medication’s effect. For this reason, it’s best to avoid Reiki unless approved by your healthcare provider.

  • Self-Care Tips After a Reiki Session

Reiki can create profound shifts in your energy, emotions, and body, and how you care for yourself afterwards can help deepen and integrate these changes. Here are some recommended practices to support your healing journey:

    1. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water after a Reiki session helps flush out any toxins that may have been released during the energy work. Water supports your body’s natural detoxification process and helps keep your energy flow smooth. Aim to drink more water than usual for the next 24-48 hours.

    2. Rest and Reflect

Give yourself permission to rest and relax after your session. Reiki can sometimes stir up emotions or bring new insights to the surface, and taking time to reflect can help you understand and integrate these changes. Consider journaling your thoughts, feelings, or any visions you experienced during the session.

    3. Spend Time in Nature

If possible, spend some quiet time in nature. Walking barefoot on grass, sitting by water, or simply breathing in fresh air can help you ground and reconnect with yourself. Nature has a calming effect that helps balance your energy after a session.

    4. Practice Gentle Movement

Gentle movement like stretching, yoga, or tai chi can help re-align your energy and prevent stagnation. If you feel a bit tired or heavy after your session, light physical activity can help you reconnect with your body and circulate the energy.

    5. Eat Nourishing Foods

Opt for light, nourishing foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, soups, or herbal teas. Avoid heavy, greasy, or processed foods right after a session, as they can make you feel sluggish and interfere with the body’s natural healing process.

    6. Allow Emotions to Flow

Reiki often works on an emotional level, and you may find yourself experiencing unexpected emotions, such as sadness, joy, or relief, even days after your session. Allow yourself to feel these emotions without judgment, knowing they are part of the healing process. Deep breathing or talking to a trusted friend can help release and process any strong feelings.

    7. Avoid Overstimulating Activities

Give your body and mind time to integrate the energy by avoiding excessive screen time, loud environments, or overly stimulating activities right after your session. Choose calming activities such as reading, taking a warm bath, or listening to soothing music.

    8. Set an Intention for Integration

Take a few moments to set a gentle intention for your healing to continue. This could be something like: “I am allowing the energy to flow through me freely,” or “I am integrating this healing with ease and grace.” Setting an intention can help anchor the energy and support its integration.

    9. Listen to Your Body

Trust your body’s wisdom after a Reiki session. If you feel tired, rest. If you feel energized, move. Everyone’s experience is different, so honor how you feel and give yourself what you need. The energy will continue to work for several days, and your body may guide you in surprising ways.

    10. Schedule Follow-Up Sessions (Optional)

For deeper or ongoing issues, consider scheduling follow-up sessions. Regular Reiki sessions can help maintain energetic balance and support continuous healing over time.

    Why Post-Session Care is Important:

Reiki sessions can activate deep shifts in your energy field, which your body and mind may need time to process. Proper self-care allows you to absorb the full benefits of the session, while minimizing the likelihood of feeling “off” or overwhelmed.
